A Southern California family is trying to clear the name of a man who they say was wrongly accused of murder.
They say the crime may actually have been committed by the man accused of being the Golden State Killer Joseph DeAngelo.
William Lee Evins was convicted in 1979 of the rape and murder of 28-year-old California mother Joan Virginia Anderson.
He died in prison of a heart attack in 2013, but his family is still hoping to vindicate him.
The attorney representing Evins posthumously says she believes details of Anderson’s murder matches the method of operation used by DeAngelo.
“There was no reason to look into the Anderson murder because there was a murderer, and he was in prison,” attorney Annee Della Donna said. “But the facts that we obtained in our investigation are very similar to the same facts of the Golden State Killer murders.”
DeAngelo is already accused of more than 50 rapes and more than a hundred burglaries in California, which date back to the 1970s.
The district attorney’s office has agreed to use DNA evidence to look into whether there is any connection between the murders of DeAngelo and Anderson.
