ALAMEDA COUNTY (KRON) — In the East Bay today, a woman arrested for biting a jogger during a confrontation on a trail made her first court appearance.

The woman’s attorney says there’s much more to the story.

“I think this is shocking how this is one sided and that is why I am talking to the media,” said Emily Dahm, attorney for the suspect, Alma Cadwalader.

Dahm says her client met the jogger on the trail at Chabot Regional Park last week. Cadwalader had her two dogs off leash, per park rules, and according to the attorney, the jogger began pepper spraying the dogs.

“I understand the jogger being startled,” said Dahm. “But she then started pepper spraying the dogs, Alma said to stop, then the jogger grabbed her by the hair and kneed her in the groin and my client had to bite her to get her to released her grip”

Dahm said her client left the park, but then the matter escalated, with East Bay Park Police investigating then rolling the case over to the Alameda County District Attorney.

The woman was arrested on several felonies, including false imprisonment and battery causing serious bodily injury.

“I understand jogger is upset, but this is not a felony case,” said the woman’s attorney.

Cadwalader was expected to be arraigned Monday, but the district attorney is still reviewing the case.

In the mean time, her attorney says all of this has been overwhelming for her client, a 19-year-old with no criminal record.

“She is certainly upset about this all,” Dahm said.
