At least 72 laptops stolen from Stanford campus in 6 months

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say a man posing as a Stanford University student or employee may be involved in a spree of laptop thefts on campus.

The San Jose Mercury News reports Wednesday (http://bayareane.ws/22dXMKE) at least 72 laptop thefts have been reported to campus police since September.

Stanford Department of Public Safety spokesman Bill Larson says the computers were taken from offices, research facilities and student residences.

Larson says investigators are looking for a person of interest after witnesses described an unfamiliar bald man wearing a brown suit who tried to gain access last month into a secured dorm that requires a badge for access. Two laptops were stolen from that residence in a four-week span.

He says it could be more than one person involved in the thefts.
