SANTA ROSA (KRON/BCN) — Police say they’ve arrested a man on suspicion of arson after a suspicious fire early Saturday morning in a Santa Rosa motel room.
Firefighters responded just before 2 a.m. to the Motel 6 Santa Rosa South at 2760 Cleveland Ave. and found smoke coming from a motel room on the ground floor of the two-story motel complex.
Crews were able to contain the fire to the room and were able to prevent it from spreading to other areas of the complex, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department.
The fire caused smoke damage to the motel room, but no other occupants of the motel were displaced, firefighters said.
The occupant of the motel room safely escaped the burning structure through a window prior to the arrival of firefighters.
Firefighters said their response to the blaze was slightly delayed due the occupant of the room barricading the door with furniture.
Sergio Michael Johnston, 32, was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism, arson and resisting arrest.
The incident caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the motel.
There were no reported injuries in the fire.
