Another BART Transbay Tube shutdown Labor Day Weekend

UNION CITY (KRON) — BART riders and commuters — brace yourself.

Another shutdown of the Transbay Tube is coming, and this time, it is over Labor Day Weekend.

KRON4’s Averi Harper talked to BART about the shutdown, and the work they will be doing this time around. It is a plan BART officials said was in the works for months.

The Transbay Tube will undergo a complete shutdown of service from Sept. 5 through Sept. 7.  This is all happening to replace thousands of feet of rail in the Transbay Tube

BART spokesman Jim Allison said changes will make for a smoother ride for commuters.

“That Tuesday after Labor Day, the trip from Oakland to San Francisco to Oakland will be quieter,” Allison said.

Allison said the repairs will also allow trains to switch tracks more easily.

“We’ll be able to move trains around trouble spots should they occur between West Oakland and Montgomery St. in San Francisco,” Allison said.

BART will provide bus service during the shutdown, but some customers will experience delays of up to an hour.

BART and Caltrans officials want people to stay local during the holiday weekend.

“If you have discretionary trips that you’re making during the the upcoming holiday weekend, if you could avoid that, it certainly helps,” Caltrans traffic director Sean Nozzari said.

During the shutdown, BART is encouraging people to use other public transit transbay options, such as ferries and AC Transit service. Check out www.511.org for trip planning.  San Francisco Bay Ferry will have additional service on its Alameda/Oakland/San Francisco and Vallejo/San Francisco routes during the BART closures.  AC Transit also has its transbay service.
