CONTRA COSTA CO. (KRON) — Contra Costa County Animal Services is waiving its spay and neuter fees for dogs and cats for the rest of April to encourage adoption, a department spokesperson announced on Friday.
Starting Friday, April 15, until Saturday, April 30, the fees will be refunded by the county department, which runs shelters in Martinez and Pinole.
“Typically this is the highest price of the adoption process,” department spokesperson Steve Burdo said. “We’re trying to do everything we can to place animals in happy and safe homes.”
Throughout February of 2016, the department stopped taking in animals due to high volumes in its shelters, except for those that were sick, injured, stray or potentially dangerous.
The current situation at the shelters is not as dire as it was then, but, Burdo said, “space is something that municipal shelters are always up against.”
Contra Costa Animal Services can be contacted at 510-374-3966.
