The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting Wednesday that killed a man being described as a felon and active gang member with a long criminal history.
It happened just after 9:30 a.m. in the area of Adelaide Drive and Pacheco Boulevard in Vine Hill near Martinez.
A man who works around the corner from there says he heard a woman screaming before multiple gunshots.
Authorities say one of their deputies was leaving a call on Adelaide near Pacheco when he spotted a man walking on the street who was wanted on a no-bail warrant for evading and resisting arrest.
After a deputy attempted to make contact, a brief foot pursuit the two began which led to a struggle with the suspect.
The suspect has been identified as a 41-year-old Discovery Bay resident but his name has not yet been released.
Authorities say the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say the man was an active member of several gangs in the county and had many past encounters with law enforcement, including drug possession, multiple accounts of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of dangerous weapons, being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The sheriff’s department spokesperson has no information about the woman seen by the witness or the silver car on the scene.
One woman did say her sister was in that car, who she said was the suspect’s girlfriend.
The deputy was not injured and he has been put on administrative leave as the sheriff’s department and the district attorney’s office continues to investigate the shooting.
