UPDATE 8:25 a.m. — BART officials say that service has been restored to the five stations that were closed due to an electrical fire.EAST BAY (KRON) — There are major BART delays system wide due to an equipment problem on the tracks between Lake Merritt and Bay Fair, according to BART officials.

Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Coy Justice said they received reports of smoke coming out of a train car at the Fruitvale BART station.

BART official Jim Allison says the fire was likely caused by an electrical problem.

About 50 passengers were on the train car that filled with smoke.

Passengers are being treated at nearby hospitals, likely for smoke inhalation, Justice said.

BART officials say there is no service between the Lake Merritt and Bay Fair stations.

Buses have begun ferrying passengers between the stations affected, but riders are still advised to use other means of transportation if travelling on the Fremont Line.

The disruption is affecting trains on the Blue, Green and Orange lines. The Yellow and Red lines heading into San Francisco from the East Bay are not affected, officials said.

Due to excess vehicular commuters this morning, Bay Bridge traffic lanes are slow.
