ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man was arrested after police say he stole an ambulance from Presbyterian Hospital.

It happened around 3 a.m. Saturday.

APD was dispatched to the area of Jefferson and Zuni after reports of a stolen ambulance.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the suspect, who has been identified as David Neher, fled.

Police say he went approximately 30 miles an hour out the entire pursuit with a flat tire, shooting sparks onto the road.

Eventually, Police used spike belts to disable the front tires.

The vehicle finally came to a stop at University and Central where the suspect was taken into custody.

They say a pursuit with such a large vehicle is particularly dangerous.

“Now that we’re short one ambulance in town, it does take a hit on the city. But we need to make sure that their protocols are looked at because we can’t have another ambulance stolen like this in town,” says Ofc. Simon Drobik.

Police say Neher has an extensive arrest history. He has been booked three times so far in 2018.

Officers say he likely suffers from mental health issues.

He has yet to see a judge in this new case.
