Alameda schools change dress code, says it’s biased against girls

School dress codes have been around for decades, but more and more schools claim that the codes are biased and more restrictive against women and can lead to body shaming.

But on East Bay school district has made a change to its policy.

In past years, spaghetti straps would have been off-limits for students in the Alameda Unified School District.

It was all part of the dress code which focused on how much skin was showing. Outfits like spaghetti straps and short shorts were off-limits.

The school district is now changing the policy after discovering the policy was sexist, with more restrictions for girls than boys.

This coming school year, the private part of the body will still need to be covered and clothing with hate speech, bias, or promoting drugs will remain off-limits.

But the district will no longer police how much skin is showing on shoulders and legs.
