ALAMEDA (KRON) — Food, diapers and cleaning supplies loaded up by people from all across Alameda — they’re helping struggling Coast Guard families stay on their feet during the federal government shutdown.

“I would say the hardest thing is just not knowing if we’re going to get that next paycheck,” said Danielle Manor, a Coast Guard spouse.

Manor has been dealing with recent hardship but is stepping up to help others in need.

“A lot of us families live paycheck to paycheck,” said Manor. “We’ve got kids to feed.”

Otto Wright has been opening the doors of his Alameda Avenue coffee shop for a flood  of donations to help families affected by the government shutdown.

“We’ve got lots of Coast Guard families who live here in Alameda, Alameda is very small,” said Wright.

Wright says it’s important for neighbors to help each other, especially in these unsettling times.

We hope that this is not something that goes on for weeks or months as the president says,” said Manor. ” We hope it’s something that goes very quickly.”

Manor is getting through the shut down with a smile on her face with gratitude for those lending a hand.

‘It’s very stressful but it’s what we do — we’ll get over this, we’ll make it through and obviously with the help of the community, it makes it easier,” she said.
