LONDON (WISH) – Alan Rickman, the beloved British actor famous for his roles in “Harry Potter” and “Love Actually,” has died. He was 69 years old.
BBC and The Guardian first reported Rickman’s death Thursday morning. His death was confirmed by his family. The actor had been suffering from cancer and died in London.
Rickman’s film credits began in 1978 when he appeared in a TV film production of “Romeo & Juliet” as Tybalt. That same year he acted on stage in “The Tempest” at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England.
In 1988, he played the role of Hans Gruber in the blockbuster smash “Die Hard” alongside Bruce Willis.
The actor took home a Golden Globe in 1997 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV. The award was for his work in the 1996 biopic “Rasputin.”
Rickman become popular with a new generation of moviegoers in 2001 when he brought the role of Severus Snape to life in the “Harry Potter” films.
Rickman is survived by his partner of 50 years, Rima Horton, whom he recently married.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
