BLACKSBURG (WSLS) – A fraternity at Virginia Tech has been suspended for the next 10 years.
Virginia Tech leaders say the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has been banned for hazing.
While specific details about the incident have not been released, the school says it happened in mid-January.
Virginia Tech leaders say they have a zero-tolerance policy and the chapter will be unrecognized until May 2026.
“When you have allegations or suggestions of students doing harm to other students, hazing is often attributed to fraternities. We take those allegations very seriously,” said Mark Owczarski, the assistant vice president for news and information at Virginia Tech.
The national Alpha Phi Alpha organization will make a decision to revoke the fraternity’s charter next year.
Alpha Phi Alpha is the oldest black Greek fraternity on campus. It was founded in 1973.
