BERKELEY (BCN) – A second set of partial human remains was found late last week during excavation work at a construction site in West Berkeley, a spokeswoman for the developer said today.

The remains were found under a sidewalk in the 1900 block of Fourth Street, where the real estate firm Jamestown is building a 53,000-square-foot retail project, according to Jamestown spokeswoman Lauren Jennings.

Jennings said, “The shopping district is one of the most desirable in California” and tenants include the historic Spenger’s Fish Grotto, Anthropologie and Paper Source.

When the remains were found, construction was stopped and the remains were removed by an archeological team that’s being supervised by the Ohlone Indian Tribe’s appointed representative, Andrew Galvan, she said.

Galvan is storing the remains and preparing them for reburial based on his own recommendations, according to Jennings.

Construction work has resumed in accordance Galvan’s recommendations and with onsite monitoring by a professional archaeologist and Galvan’s team, she said.

The first set of remains were found on March 29 in a trench being dug beneath Spenger’s.

Jamestown will inform the community if there are any further developments, Jennings said.

Jamestown has headquarters in Atlanta and New York and has additional offices in San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Boston.
