SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say a 45-year-old man has died on Southern California’s Mount Baldy, the third hiker to suffer a fatal fall on the mountainside this month.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said the San Diego man slipped from the Devil’s Backbone trail Saturday afternoon. He was found about 1,000 feet below.

His name has not been released.

On Feb. 2, 23-year-old Daniel Nguyen fell to his death when he reached out to save a friend who slipped while hiking on the Devil’s Backbone trail.

On Feb 6, 47-year-old Dong Xing Liu died after he and his wife slipped and fell in the Icehouse Saddle area south of Mount Baldy. Authorities said about a dozen hikers were airlifted that same day from the mountain, where icy and windy conditions have been common.
