RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – According to police, a five-year-old boy was backed over by a car driven by his aunt in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Southside Richmond Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened at about 2:40 p.m. at the St. John’s Wood Apartment Complex, near the pool and rental office.
At the time of their arrival, witnesses said the child was pinned under the car, and his aunt was screaming in terror after the accident.
“She was crying. I was trying to calm her down. I even had my hand over her back, trying to calm her down and let her know that the child is fine,” John Hodges, one of the first people on the scene, told WRIC-TV.
Around that time, Chris Lee, the pool attendant at the apartment complex, and a certified lifeguard showed up.
“The adrenaline kicked in. I jumped out of the seat, ran over there … and slid under the car, holding on to him, trying to assess his injuries,” Lee said.
First responders were able to lift the car off of the child. Police said he is being treated at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“I think he’s gonna have a couple of broken bones and scrapes, and a good story to tell, but he will be alright,” Lee said.
Hodges agreed with Lee, “He made it through. That’s a strong child, and he’s a strong warrior. I called him Hercules.”
