NORTHWEST INDIANA (CNN) — Nine schools in Northwest Indiana were closed Tuesday because of bomb threats. Thousands of students were affected by the closures, and authorities are diligently searching each school, a juvenile is in custody according to police officials.

The two phone calls came late last night to two local police stations. The caller targeted schools and mentioned Homan school specifically.

After meeting with authorities late last night, a Lake Central school superintendent decided to shut down three total schools.

Six private schools,  St. John Evangelist school, Crown Point Christian school, 3 Hammond Baptist schools and St. Michael school in Schererville also closed.

Larry Veracco superintendent of Lake Central school corporation said “you on the side of student safety, especially because Homan was specifically named. That tipped the scale.”

Parents got a robocall early this morning warning them of the closures.

Some parents of high school students which were not targeted decided to pull their kids out of class as a precaution.

Police and state troopers are combing each of the schools with k-9 unite all day today.

Parents will be updated later this afternoon.

In the meantime, authorities promise diligence, “we’re doing everything we possibly can to make sure our students and our town in schererville are as safe as they possibly can.”
