A child was killed and her parents were injured in a crash on Interstate 680 in Sunol Friday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.

The incident was first reported at 12:26 a.m. on northbound 680, just south of Highway 84.

Traffic was slowing down due to construction in the area, CHP said.

This is when the driver of a black Dodge reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended a white Toyota Corolla. The Dodge flipped over once, landing on its roof.

The Toyota was pushed into a gray Ford.

An 8-year-old girl inside the Toyota and her parents were rushed to a local trauma center.

The child was pronounced dead shortly after. Her father is suffering from major injuries. The mother’s injuries were minor, according to CHP,  and she is expected to be okay.

CHP says drugs and alcohol are not a factor, and it is unclear if the driver who fell asleep will face any charges.

Northbound I-680 was closed for 90 minutes while officers investigated.

A Traffic Alert was issued.

All lanes are open as of 2:30 a.m. and traffic is no longer impacted.

The collision remains under investigation.
