WATSONVILLE (BCN) — A 54-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a car in Watsonville late Saturday afternoon, police said.

At about 4:50 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of a collision involving a car and pedestrian on Main Street near the Crossroads Shopping Center, police Master Officer Burt Iles said.

The pedestrian had been walking east across Main Street at the shopping center and was struck by a car heading north, Iles said.

Emergency crews were called and pronounced the pedestrian, a Watsonville resident, dead at the scene, according to Iles.

The driver, a 25-year-old San Jose resident, did not see the pedestrian in time to avoid the collision, Iles said.

The intersection has traffic signals and streetlights were on at the time, the officer said.

The roadway was wet due to a combination of mist and fog in the area, which also reduced visibility, according to Iles.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the collision, Iles said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Watsonville police at (831) 768-3000.
