LAKE TAHOE (KRON) — Firefighters evacuated 500 homes near Lake Tahoe, as crews continue to battle the blaze, Friday morning.

According to Cal Fire, the Emerald fire was first reported around 1:30 a.m. and it quickly grew up to 200 acres. The fire has impacted the residents of El Dorado County, south of South Lake Tahoe.

So far zero containment has been made on the rapidly-growing fire.

Cal Fire crews have issued voluntary evacuations for an additional 500 homes nearby.

Crews said, Highway 89 is closed from the Placer County and El Dorado County line in Tahoma and an evacuation center has been setup at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center.

Strong winds have made it rather difficult for fire crews to battle the blaze, wind gust have been reported to be flowing up to 100 mph. Rain has reached the area.
