SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has announced that Blaine Gabbert will be the starting quarterback for the 2016 season.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be the backup.

The 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams on September 12 to start the regular season.

Kaepernick started the 2015 season but injuries and poor play cost him the starting job.

Gabbert took over. The 49ers ended the season 5-11.

Gabbert started in three preseason games and Kaepernick started in the finale.

Kaepernick has been the center of controversy after saying he won’t stand up for the national anthem.
