Santa Clara (KRON) The 49ers former first round draft pick Anthony Davis is retiring from football. The 49ers have been hit hard by players retiring in the off season. Chris Borland, Patrick Willis and Justin Smith have all called it quits.
Tackle Anthony Davis, the 11th-overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2010, has told the team that he plans to retire.
The 49ers announced the move Friday. Davis hadn’t been with the team during offseason workouts.
San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke thanked Davis in a statement for his contributions to the 49ers and said the team “wishes him the best as he moves on from the game.”
The 25-year-old Davis had started all 71 games in which he had appeared, as well as eight playoff games.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Friday that T Anthony Davis has informed the team he plans to retire from the National Football League.
“The 49ers organization thanks Anthony for his contributions to our team over the last five seasons and wishes him the best as he moves on from the game,” said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke.
Originally the 11th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, Davis has started all 71 games in which he has appeared, as well as eight postseason contests. He and his fellow 49ers offensive linemen were named the 2012 recipients of the Madden’s Most Valuable Protectors Award, given annually to the NFL’s top offensive line as selected by the Hall of Fame coach.
A 25-year-old native of Piscataway, NJ, Davis attended Rutgers University where he played in 38 games (32 starts) for the Scarlet Knights.
