NOVATO (BCN) — A 16-year-old boy and his two younger brothers were injured when their car overturned and struck a wood power pole on northbound U.S. Highway 101 in Novato on Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP received almost two dozen phone calls after the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox went off the highway north of Atherton Avenue and struck the pole on the east side of the highway around 9:30 p.m.

The teen driver and his two brothers, ages 5 and 13, were trapped inside the car. Novato Fire Protection District crews extricated the driver and the two younger boys were able to get out unassisted, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The Equinox was one of three vehicles in a family caravan traveling from Buellton in Santa Barbara County to Santa Rosa. The other two vehicles that were traveling behind the Equinox stopped after the crash, and the boys’ mother and other family members gave aid to the three siblings, Barclay said.

When the Equinox went off the right side of Highway 101 onto the dirt and grass, the teen driver panicked and tried to stop the car and veer back onto the roadway, Barclay said.

Instead, the Equinox overturned onto its side and shattered the base of the pole. The bottom of the pole came to rest on the roof of the car and the top of the pole was held up by electrical wires as the pole traveled approximately 30 feet, Barclay said.

The family had been traveling all day, and fatigue and drowsy driving might have contributed to the crash, Barclay said.

The teen driver had a provisional license that prohibits him from having a passenger under 20 years old in the vehicle without a parent or guardian. It’s possible the teen will be cited for that violation, according to Barclay.

The driver was taken by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and his brothers were taken by ambulance to Marin General Hospital, Barclay said. All three have since been released.

The right lane of northbound Highway 101 is expected to remain closed until noon Monday while PG&E repairs the downed power pole, Barclay said.
