Three men are behind bars on suspicion of attempted murder and kidnapping.

Authorities say the trio tied up and beat a man at around 7:30 a.m. It happened on Sunday at a marijuana farm in the 6500 block of St. Helena Road in Santa Rosa.

The victim says he was the former pot grower of that farm but was replaced by one of the three suspects, 34-year-old Moises Calvillo-Chavez of El Cajon.

The victim says he and Calvillo-Chavez had a disagreement over the phone, prompting Calvillo-Chavez and two men, Chad Michael Canup, 32, of Garberville, and Salvador Martinez, 22, of Lakeside, to attack him.

“The caller, Moises Calvillo-Chavez, who later turned out to be one of three suspects, called the Sheriff’s Office stating the former head grower for their marijuana farm was going crazy and had been tied up to a chair but he let him go,” deputies said in a press release.

“The victim had originally been living on the property but due to the disagreements, he has been staying at a neighbor’s home,” deputies added.

Calvilllo-Chavez had a .22 caliber rifle with him.

“Calvillo-Chavez pointed the rifle at the victim and tried to shoot him several times but the gun malfunctioned and did not fire. Calvillo-Chavez then hit the victim on the back of the head with the stock of the gun. When the victim fell to the ground, all three suspects repeatedly hit and kicked him in the head,” deputies said.

Deputies say that’s when the three tied up the victim and interrogated him.

The 43-year-old victim suffered a back contusion but will be OK. Deputies found him walking barefoot and with a broken wooden chair arm taped to his arm. He also suffered abrasions on his arms and ankles.

The victim was able to escape after he was left alone.

Authorities found the three men near the farm and arrested them. Detectives seized the rifle, duct tape, the broken chair, and an ax.

The three suspects were booked into the Sonoma County Jail on charges of murder, robbery, kidnapping, burglary, conspiracy, false imprisonment, and vehicle theft. They are being held on $1.2 million bail.
