3-alarm fire in San Mateo displaces 14 people

SAN MATEO (KRON) — An investigation is under way into a 3-alarm fire in San Mateo that left 14 people without a home.

The fire broke out at about 9:00 p.m. Thursday night in the 3300 block of La Selva St. and we are learning that it’s not the first time there’s been a fire on that same property.

Firefighters responded to another fire at the complex on May 1st. Investigators say they’re looking into whether the two fires are related. The repairs from the previous incident were nearly complete before this latest blaze, San Mateo fire officials said.

Residents described the heavy smoked that emerged from the complex as fire crews battled the flames Thursday night. Investigators say the first crew to arrive reported fire in the building’s attic.

Paramedics treated one firefighter for a muscle strain but the firefighter was able to remain on scene to keep working, fire officials said. No one else was hurt.

The 14 people who displaced are receiving help with temporary shelter from the American Red Cross, according to the fire department.

Investigators said Thursday’s fire caused an estimated $1 million in damage.
