SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — A San Francisco man died while surfing at Ocean Beach Sunday evening, officials said on Monday.

San Francisco firefighters and National Parks Service personnel responded to Ocean Beach near Rivera Street around 6:30 p.m. Sunday for a surf rescue, according to fire department spokesman Jonathan Baxter.

The surfer, who has been identified by the medical examiner as 29-year-old Jason Zumbo, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Baxter said.

Baxter said it is unclear if Zumbo experienced a medical event in the water.
