2 Men Plead Not Guilty in Shooting and Hatchet Attack

REDWOOD CITY (KRON) — Two alleged gang members have pleaded not guilty to charges related to a February shooting that injured a 19-year-old man.

Daniel Nau and Jose Pablo Ramirez, both 20-year-old residents of San Mateo, have been charged with attempted murder with gang enhancements and assault with a deadly weapon.

San Mateo Police believe that the shooting started as an attempted hatchet attack.

Around 4:30 p.m. on February 13, officers with the Redwood City Police Department were called to Peninsula Avenue at the U.S. 101 overpass where a young man had been shot.

Attorney’s with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s office say that Ramirez threw a hatchet at the victim, but missed.

They say that after Ramirez missed, Nau shot the victim three times.

The first two shots hit the victim in the stomach, the third hit his back as he was turning around to run away.

It didn’t take long for police to link Ramirez and Nau to the crime.

Ramirez was arrested on the 14th as he was leaving his girlfriend’s house.

Nau was arrested a day later after being tracked to an Oakland house.

A SWAT team arrived and took him into custody without incident.

A search resulted in multiple firearms found at the house.

The duo will be back in court April 9 at 1:30 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.

Both men are in jail, with no bail offered.
