SAN MATEO (KRON) — A 2-alarm fire has left an apartment complex in San Mateo with severe damage.

The fire broke out around 5:15 a.m. at a complex in the 3700 block of La Selva Street.

A third alarm was called for a short time, but fire fighters were able to downgrade the fire after they took an aggressive approach with it.

Five people were displaced in the fire; four adults and one child.

One of the residents had 30 birds and many fish. She believes that they were all killed in the fire. Three cats are also unaccounted for.
