SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A child was struck and killed by a MUNI Light Rail Vehicle this morning on Lake View and San Jose Avenue in San Francisco’s Ingleside neighborhood, according to fire officials.

A family friend of the victim identified the boy as 12-year-old Andrew Wu.

Officers received reports of the accident at 8:28 a.m.

According to witnesses, the boy was running down Lake View Avenue when two cars had to slam on their breaks to avoid hitting him.  The boy then fell onto the tracks of the LRV, and was struck

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Albie Esparza said the victim lived nearby and his parents were at the scene of the collision.

“It’s traumatic. It’s impacted the whole neighborhood, his friends, his family,” Esparza said. “t’s really a tragedy when a life is cut short.”

According to Esparza, the boy was a student at Aptos Middle School.

Witnesses said the train was empty and the the conductor remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

According to Muni officials, the collision has caused the M-Ocean View line to turn back at the corner of Broad Street and Plymouth Avenue.
