DUBLIN (KRON) — A 12-year-old boy was struck by a car while he was riding his bicycle in Dublin Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
The middle school student was on his way to school around 7:51 a.m. when he was hit by a car outside of Dublin High School on Village Parkway, the Alameda County Fire Department said.
The boy broke his arm in a couple places when he was hit by and trapped underneath the car, police said.
The victim was trapped under the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire officials.
Firefighters used a hydraulic airbag system and the Jaws of Life to lift the car to rescue the boy.
“They had to lift it up pretty high” because he was entwined with the car, Holmes said.
The boy was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Oakland with injuries not considered life-threatening.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Police are not planning to arrest the driver, a 72-year-old man, because no criminal action occurred, according to Holmes.
Police are testing the driver for drugs and alcohol, but believe that the driver was not under the influence.
Alameda County Fire Department officials initially said the boy was 15 years old, but has since clarified that the boy is 12.
The boy was wearing a helmet.
“He’s very, very lucky,” Capt. Garrett Holmes said of the boy. “This could have been terrible.”
The driver of the car was at the high school dropping off his granddaughter before the collision.
