It has been a year since a woman was killed inside her family’s East Bay home and investigators are nowhere close to identifying a suspect.
The family is now putting up a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
It’s been a long year for the Courchesne family.
Filled with grief and questions, they’re hoping a $10,000 reward will inspire anyone that may have answers to speak out.
“One of the things that’s so hard when someone dies like this is that people don’t talk to each other and they don’t mention her,” Emily’s mother Marj Courchesne said.
Not a day goes by where Courchesne doesn’t think about her daughter.
“I didn’t want her to get lost,” Courchesne said. “We love and think about her all the time.”
Last year, the 37-year-old was house sitting for her uncle who was on vacation.
“She was supposed to help my grandson with homework and she didn’t show up,” Courchesne said. “We texted and called but didn’t hear back. I figured she was out with friends.”
That was Wednesday, Oct. 5. By Thursday, Emily’s boss called saying she hadn’t been to work in two days.
“That was extremely unusual,” Courchesne said.
Her mother immediately called the sheriff’s office and asked for a welfare check. She was found shot to death in her uncle’s home on Marsh Creek Road near Byron in unincorporated Contra Costa County.
It is believed she was killed sometime between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
“We haven’t been able to find any links,” Courchesne said.
The family believes it was a home invasion gone wrong. The intruders didn’t expect anyone to be home and may have panicked.
For her mother, it’s been difficult dealing with this loss.
“She was very bright, funny, and have spirited conversations,” Courchesne said.
Emily loved playing softball, and in her honor, friends and family will be holding a memorial this Saturday at the Willow Pass batting cages in Concord.
