RICHMOND (KRON) — Hundreds of participants will assemble in Richmond this weekend to attempt setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of women and girls dressed as Rosie the Riveter.
This Saturday, Aug. 15, at Richmond’s Marina Park (corner of Regatta Boulevard and Melville Square), the Rosie the Riveter Trust and Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park invite women and girls of all ages to dress the part and help break the current record of Rosies.
In the mobilizing spirit of Rosie the Riveter, the iconic image representing American women who went to work — many in factories — while men battled during World War II, organizers are hopeful at least 1,000 Rosies will assemble to claim the record for Richmond and the San Francisco Bay Area.
The current world record was set March 29, 2014, when 776 Rosies gathered at the Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan, according to Guinness World Records.
In order to be counted as part of this potential record-breaking event taking place at the Rosie the Riveter Memorial, participants are required to dress according to the guidelines established by the Guinness World Records. Rosies must wear:
- Red bandanna with large white polka-dots;
- Either dark-blue, long-sleeved coveralls, or long-sleeve, dark-blue collared shirt with dark-blue pants;
- Black or brown boots or work shoes; and
- Red knee-high socks.
Look-alikes will be eliminated from the final count if they wear faded denim jeans, denim shirts, bib overalls, T-shirts or sweats, warned organizers.
Just like the classic image, long sleeves must be rolled up, organizers explained. As well, pants must be rolled up to reveal the Rosie look-alike’s red socks. Hair should be pinned up, not down or in a ponytail.
The first 100 participants to arrive on Saturday for the event running from 1 to 3 p.m. will receive for free an official Rosie bandana and a pair of red socks from Rosie the Riveter Trust, according to organizers.
