A 10-year-old girl is in critical condition on Wednesday night after she was hit by a car on her way to school.
The accident happened at the Balfour Road and Guise Way intersection in Brentwood.
The community is banding together to help the child’s family.
Tia Longmire is in a drug-induced coma. She’s been unresponsive since the day of the accident.
“They are monitoring her brain for swelling, and for oxygen,” Claudia Luce said.
Tia is in critical condition. Her family has been at her bedside for days.
While crossing Balfour Road and Guise Way to get to school Monday, she was hit while in the crosswalk.
Her younger sister Nicole jumped into action.
“Actually pulled her out of the roadway to safety and then a nurse stopped, helped, and then Nicole ran and got help,” Luce said.
Tia was airlifted to U.C.Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento.
“She has a lot of broken bones, but those can heal,” Luce said. “It’s all about the brain.”
Right now, doctors have adjusted her meds, and it’s a wait and see.
“They’ve reduced the meds a little to see if she’ll respond and she has not,” Luce said. “She hasn’t responded since the accident.”
The fun-loving sixth-grader has been missed at school. Students at Edna Hill Middle School tell KRON4 they’ve written her letters that will be delivered to her dad Nick.
Family friends tell KRON4 he is being optimistic Tia will get through this.
“I think the prayers need to continue and the hopefulness needs to continue,” Bill Luce said.
The driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. This appears to be a terrible accident.
With lots of children that live and go to school in the area, neighbors are pushing for a stop light or crossing guard in the vicinity.
The family has started a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of Tia’s hospitalization.
On Sunday, Sept. 23, Dutch Bros. in Oakley will donate all proceeds toward Tia’s medical expenses.
