SUNNYVALE (BCN) — Counselors are available at Santa Clara High School Monday to help students, teachers and family members grieving the death of a 15-year-old boy who died in a crash in Sunnyvale over the weekend, a school district spokeswoman said.
Santa Clara resident Deepak Kundu, 15, and Sunnyvale resident Pawandeep Singh, 25, were identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office as the victims who died in the crash reported at 5:35 p.m. Saturday on Central Expressway just east of North Bernardo Avenue.
Kundu was a sophomore at the high school, Santa Clara Unified School District spokeswoman Jennifer Dericco said.
The crash occurred when a two-door coupe was traveling east on Central Expressway and the driver lost control. The car struck a tree in the center median, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
The car caught fire. Bystanders were able to get one person out of the vehicle and emergency responders got the other person out, but both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but slick roads from rain earlier in the day may have been a factor, according to Capt.
Vince Chetcuti with the Department of Public Safety.Chetcuti said investigators are awaiting toxicology reports and are looking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash.
