OAKLAND (KRON) — One person was killed in a crash involving Oakland police vehicles early Tuesday morning.

Officers were at 35th and Brookdale Avenue at around 12:58 a.m. investigating a shooting that left one person injured, according to police.

While officers were conducting their investigation, officers witnessed a car traveling at a high rate of speed coming towards their parked police SUVs.

The car, a red Chevrolet Impala, ran into a few parked cars before slamming into three parked OPD vehicles. No officers were injured.

There were five passengers in the car that hit the police cars. The front-seat passenger, identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 27-year-old Hayward resident Marcello Lopez, was killed.

The driver, a 27-year-old Oakland man whose name is not yet being released, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Three other passengers in the Chevy, two men and a woman in their 20s, were taken to hospitals with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.

The victim of the shooting that police were investigating when the crash occurred has also been taken to the hospital.

It does not appear that the shooting and the crash are related but the investigation is ongoing.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.Stay with KRON4 News for updates
