SAN MATEO, Calif. (KRON) – All Bay Area counties have landed on the state’s coronavirus watch list.
This comes after San Mateo County on Wednesday became the most recent California county added to the monitoring list.
According to county data, there were 998 new cases reported in the last 14 days, and four new deaths.
“Today, I didn’t have a single person in my story,” Heidi Howard said.
That’s how it’s been before reopening for Heidi Howard, she owns Earthy Treasures, a boutique on San Carlos Avenue.
What she’s been doing to stay afloat…
“Only by using my retirement monday,” she said.
She said she’s even offered sales to get customers through the doors, but it’s not enough.
“I knew right from the beginning that in order to get through this, I’ll have to put some of my retirement money in but I have two years to go before I retire and I’m definitely committed to stay,” she said.
At last check, there were 5,306 confirmed coronavirus cases in the county and 118 deaths.
There were 27,971 coronavirus tests reported in the last 14 days, with 3.6% of tests positive.
A further shutdown may be ordered by the state if the county remains on the list for three days.
The county is now preparing for the potential shutdown of additional businesses.
The following industries or activities must shut down, unless they can modified to operate outside or by pick-up:
- Gyms and fitness centers
- Places of worship and cultural ceremonies, like weddings and funerals
- Offices for non-critical infrastructure sectors
- Personal care services, like nail salons and body waxing
- Hair salons and barbershops
- Shopping malls
Tattoo, piercing and electrolysis shops cannot operate outdoors and must close.
A total of 38 counties are on the list, 93% of the state’s population.
