ATHERTON, Calif. (KRON) – The exclusive ‘Menlo School’ in Atherton announced on Wednesday that all classes, athletic events, arts, clubs, and planned field trips are canceled through the weekend due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The news comes after a Menlo School staff worker came into contact with a relative who tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a statement from Head of School Than Healy.

To be clear, no one at the school has been diagnosed with the coronavirus, the closure is related to the possible contact outside of the school.

The school says it is working with the CDC and the San Mateo County Department of Health at this time, and will utilize a cleaning service to “deep clean the entire campus.”

The usually bustling campus on Val Paraiso Avenue was deserted on Wednesday.

“We learned yesterday that a staff member had come into contact with a relative who tested positive for the virus,” Communications Director Alex Perez said.

A security guard turned away all visitors Wednesday.

“We are trying to be transparent and open with our community and we will share with them as much as we know and will update the community as more details become available,” Perez said.

The spokesman said the staff member is not a teacher and does not have direct contact with students.

While the school works to better understand the health of the employee, the school will undergo a deep cleaning by an outside service.

Earlier this week classes were canceled at the Healdsburg School out of precaution over coronavirus concerns.
