We’ve been honoring outstanding teachers in the Bay Area, and on Tuesday, it’s a science teacher at Dewey Academy in Oakland. Nestor Gonzalez teachers physics and biology.
His principal says he has great relationships with his students and teaches outside the box.
One example–this year he’s focusing on environmental science. So, Nestor is taking his class outdoors to do experiments at the channel that feeds into Lake Merritt.
This past summer, he worked with a summer internship program.
He’d contact the kids in the mornings to make sure they were awake, had breakfast, and had a way to get to their internships.
Sometimes, he’d even take them himself to ensure their success.
If you know a special teacher you’d like to nominate, you can do so here.
