KRON4

Teacher of the Week: Monica Lun

KRON4 has been honoring outstanding teachers in the Bay Area.

On Tuesday night, it’s Monica Lun who teaches at Garfield Elementary in San Francisco.

She loves her students and loves celebrating Halloween with them.

Monica is in her 17th year as the Chinese immersion kindergarten teacher.

A favorite tradition, she hand-crafts classroom-themed costumes for them.

She likes to feature things prominent in Chinese and Asian culture, including panda bears, soy sauce, red envelopes, and even boba milk cups.

Her daughter says she began years ago when she noticed many of her Chinese-American students weren’t aware of the Halloween tradition of dressing up in costumes.

Some didn’t have the money to spend on them.

Monica wanted every child to feel included with the rest of the school and have fun.

Colleagues say it’s evidence of her creativity and dedication to her students.

Her principal says she never fails to provide an “amazing experience” for them.I
