San Francisco police are investigating a fatal collision involving a city transit bus Saturday night.
Authorities say a man was struck and killed by a Golden Gate Transit bus around 7:30 p.m. near the corner of Golden Gate and Hyde street in the Tenderloin.
Supervisor Matt Haney says changes are needed at the “incredibly dangerous intersection” where the accident occurred.
Haney says the intersection has fast-moving traffic, rapid turns and a large number of pedestrians.
I watched this intersection for an hour this morning. People swing the right turn super fast onto Hyde, including buses. It’s relatively blind, especially at night or if someone is slightly out of the cross walk. We can make this change immediately!— Matt Haney (@MattHaneySF) May 12, 2019
A man was killed by a car at Hyde/Golden Gate last night. The TL has some of the most dangerous intersections in the city. We need to implement NOW what we’ve recently put in place a block away—no turns while pedestrians are crossing, traffic slowing, better lighting #VisionZero pic.twitter.com/tiuWoQpXzo— Matt Haney (@MattHaneySF) May 12, 2019
Non-profit organization Walk San Francisco said the killing marked the 10th pedestrian death in the city this year.
We are in shock in hearing this news.
THIS IS THE TENTH PEDESTRIAN DEATH THIS YEAR IN SF. THIS MUST STOP.@LondonBreed @sfmta_muni & every Supervisor: We have a crisis on our streets and it must be treated as such. #VisionZeroSF #IWalkSF https://t.co/gCS5mDn7qL— Walk San Francisco (@walksf) May 12, 2019
Priya Clemens, a spokesperson for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, said the man fell backward and hit his head on the transit bus.
Clemens said the bus driver immediately underwent drug and alcohol test and is on administrative leave.
