A $1,200 violin that was left on a bus in San Francisco last month has been returned, according to police.

The violin was turned in Thursday night.

On Feb. 20 at around 9:08 a.m., a 14-year-old boarded the outbound 38 bus through the rear doors at Geary and 6th Avenue.

The teen made his way to the back of the bus, sat down, and placed his violin case under his seat.

At around 9:14 a.m., a woman boarded the outbound bus at Geary and 20th Avenue.

She proceeded to the rear side of the bus and sat down.

At about 9:19 a.m. the boy exited the bus without his violin case at Geary and 33rd Avenue.

Authorities say a few minutes later, the woman picked up the violin case and got off the bus at Point Lobos/Geary Blvd and 42nd Avenue.

An attorney for the woman who took the instrument, says the woman saw a group of students on the MUNI bus on the morning of Feb. 20.

When one of the students left behind the violin, she picked it up in concern that would get lost. The attorney said in a statement, the woman then contacted local middle and high schools in hopes of finding its rightful owner.

Neither schools she contacted had reports of the missing violin, prompting her to hold on to the instrument..

According to the attorney, the woman intended to contact the MUNI, but got busy with work. She assumed one of the schools she contacted would eventually reach out to her about the violin.

Once she was made aware the police department was searching for her, she contacted the precinct and gave the violin to an officer.
