ROHNERT PARK (KRON) — A Sonoma County teenager has been arrested for allegedly posting a photo of an airsoft gun on Snapchat and warning viewers not to go to school.

The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety says an investigator with Snapchat came across the photo of the weapon on Sunday and was able to trace the photo to an IP address in Rohnert Park. The investigator then reached out to the FBI.

Once police became aware of the Snapchat posting, officers obtained a search warrant for the teenager’s home and found an airsoft weapon made to look like a real gun.

Public safety officials say the 17-year-old suspect told officers he was “joking” around and didn’t believe the posting showing the weapon would be a big deal. The suspect told police the weapon belonged to a friend.

Rohnert Park officers tracked down the suspect’s friend who said he wasn’t aware the suspect was going to take a photo of the weapon.

The gun was later confiscated and taken into evidence, police said.

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested and booked into juvenile hall on criminal threat charges.
