Prosecutors have yet to say what caused a Milpitas woman to allegedly strangle her grandson to death, but they do say there was a witness.

Foos Hashi made her first court appearance Friday afternoon since being arrested at her home earlier this week.

Hashi was surrounded by her public defender and a Somali interpreter but did not enter a plea.

She is charged with murder, assault of a child leading to death and child endangerment.

Deputy District Attorney Luis Ramos said, “There’s nothing we can do to bring him back but we will do all we can to make sure the person responsible is held accountable.”

Prosecutors would not say what led up to the killing, nor would they comment on Hashi’s mental state, but they did say the victim’s 4-year-old cousin witnessed the attack.

Ramos said, “The 4-year-old has revealed she watched the grandmother strangle the child and throw him down on the floor.”

Court documents say when the victim’s aunt returned home with her other children, Hashi said the victim, who had been ill, had vomited so she put him in an upstairs bedroom to rest.

The boy’s aunt found him unresponsive and when she called 911, court documents say she said she saw marks on his neck that indicated he was choked.

Hashi is due back in court on May 8.
