SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – Fire crews have contained an early morning fire at the Sierra Madre Apartments in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.

It was a 6-floor residential structure with elderly residents and animals.

The fire broke out just before 6:00 a.m. this morning at 421 Leavenworth St.

20 people had to be rescued, 15 were injured, and 60 were displaced.

One Officer was injured while rescuing residents but sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say the fire did not spread to any other building.

The fire remains under investigation.
