SANTA ANA (AP) – Police are investigating after a synthetic drug was found in holiday bread that sickened dozens of Southern Californians.

Santa Ana police are involved because the Rosca de Reyes bread was made at the local Cholula’s Bakery, which has been closed until it gets a clean bill of health.

The fruitcake-like bread is eaten in Latin America to celebrate Jan. 6, which is known as Kings Day.

But authorities say some 40 people who ate it last week complained of symptoms ranging from dizziness to hallucinations.

Preliminary tests determined that a synthetic drug was in samples but more testing is needed to identify it.

The bakery has apologized in a Facebook posting and says it’s working with health authorities.
