SACRAMENTO (KRON) — Californians would have the legal option to get prescription drugs from their doctors to end their lives if lawmakers pass a bill being introduced Wednesday at the state capitol.
Senators Bill Monning and Senator Lois Walk who represents parts of the North and East Bays are introducing the “End of Life Option Act”.
It’s based in part on the story of 29-year old Brittany Maynard who made international headlines when she had to move from the Bay Area to Oregon to take advantage of that state’s “Death with Dignity” law.
Both the Oregon law and the proposed law in California would authorize terminally ill, mentally competent patients to request help in dying from their doctors.
Such laws are also on the books in Washington, Montana, Vermont, and New Mexico.
