Over Memorial Day Weekend, there are millions of people traveling on the roads across California.

For the three-day weekend, the California Highway Patrol started their Maximum Enforcement Period.  

Over the first six hours, CHP headquarters said there were 346 DUI arrests made. In addition, at least eight people were killed in car crashes during that time. 

Officials posted to Twitter saying, “sadly, more than half of those killed were not wearing a seat belt.”

Within the first 30 hours of the enforcement, 741 DUI arrests were made and at least 18 people died in a collision — At least half of those killed were not wearing seat belts, authorities say.

“Help protect yourself and your passengers. #BuckleUp It just may save your life,” CHP headquarters tweeted.

Authorities remind drivers that there is no excuse for drinking and driving. There are many alternatives, including calling a cab, a ride share or a designated driver. 

The MEP will continue through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 27.
