ALAMEDA COUNTY (BCN) — A pedestrian who was struck and killed while reportedly trying to cross Interstate Highway 580 near the border of San Leandro and Hayward late last month has been identified by Alameda County coroner’s officials as 57-year-old Curtis Edmondson.

Edmondson apparently was a transient who had been in and out of jail and had family members around the country, according to coroner’s officials.

The California Highway Patrol said officers responded at 12:10 a.m. on March 29 to a report that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian in the eastbound lanes of I-580 near the 150th Avenue exit. They found a man, later identified as Edmondson, blocking the eastbound lanes.

A witness told officers that the pedestrian had been trying to cross the highway when a white vehicle struck him, according to the CHP.

The driver fled the scene in the vehicle.

The CHP is still investigating the hit-and-run fatality. A CHP spokesman wasn’t immediately available for comment on the case today.
