URBANA, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio woman accused of faking brain cancer and accepting donations to help with her expenses has pleaded guilty to theft.
Court documents say community members, online donors and a local Fraternal Order of the Eagles chapter raised money in 2013 for 34-year-old Heather Gaus after she said she had brain cancer.
Gaus pleaded guilty Tuesday in Champaign County Common Pleas Court.
Court documents say the amount stolen was between $1,000 and $7,500. The Dayton Daily News reports prosecutors plan to request that Guas pay restitution to victims once they determine exactly how much money she collected and who donated it.
Gaus faces up to a year in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for July 14.
A message seeking comment from Gaus’ attorney wasn’t immediately returned.
