SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Some people decided to dodge the Doyle Drive mess altogether by hopping on the ferry.

San Francisco’s Doyle Drive, a major artery for the Golden Gate Bridge, is closed for the weekend ahead of the long-awaited opening of the new roadway.

The extended weekend shut down began at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday and will continue through Monday, July 13th at 5:00 a.m., when the new Doyle Drive is set to open, according to project officials.

Officials say Golden Gate Bridge to Highway 1/19th Avenue will remain open, but drivers should expect major delays in the area. There will be no access to Highway 101 from Marina Boulevard or Lombard Street.

The public was strongly encouraged to use buses, ferries, or the Bay Bridge. And as Jackie Sissel reports, they did just that.
